Neuropen® has been designed as a consistently reliable, dual purpose device for testing large nerve fibres in the foot for peripheral neuropathy. Its beneficial features include:
- an accurately calibrated inter-changeable 10g (white) monofilament for touch/pressure assessment.
- sterile ‘Neurotip’ for assessing pain.
- convenient pocket size.
- hard casing, which protects the monofilament when not in use, with finger grips and clip.
The monofilament is calibrated to bend at 10g of force.

Replacing the Monofilament
Monofilaments lose their accuracy if used regularly, and should be replaced after 100 uses.
Soiled or worn monofilaments should be replaced by following the instructions below.
1. With the monofilament button positioned halfway along the slot in the barrel, place thumb on button and slide back towards pocket clip and click into place. The monofilament is now in the locked position.
2. To release the monofilament from the casing, from the locked position, click firmly back again. The monofilament can now be removed by holding the button and pulling away from the Neuropen. Discard in a sharps container.
3. Ensure that the new monofilament is correctly inserted into the side of the device, which is the same side as the 40g indicator (white square) and pressure gauge.
4. Take the new monofilament button between thumb and finger and feed through slot so that it appears through the hole in the end of the device.
5. Position the button halfway along the slot and click firmly into place.
CAUTION: If monofilament is used near an open sore, replace immediately with a new monofilament after use. When not in use, keep monofilament in locked position for protection.
