Product Description
Rolyan Polyform™ Thermoplastic Splinting Material
Rolyan Polyform™ was the first material developed by Rolyan and remains one of its unique low-temperature thermoplastic splinting materials. It combines a high degree of conformability, low resistance to stretch, exceptional rigidity, and high impact strength. Polyform drapes naturally, allowing clinicians to gently mold intricate contours while gravity assists with positioning.
Its stretching properties can reduce the need for precise patternmaking. The material can be reheated and reshaped repeatedly; however, once stretched, it will not return to its original shape. When cooled, Polyform provides high rigidity and resists dents, cracks, and breaks during use.
Key Material Benefits
- Strong and highly conformable Rolyan splinting material
- Minimum resistance to stretch
- Maximum conformability
- High degree of drape
- Maximum rigidity when cooled
- Easily conforms to surface contours and details
- Non-toxic, latex-free, and radiolucent material
- Suitable for detailed and intricate splint molding
Handling Characteristics
- Resistance to Stretch: Minimum – stretches easily when heated and requires soft, gentle pressure when forming a splint.
- Conformability: Maximum – easily conforms to surface contours and details, providing a precise fit with a high degree of drape.
- Memory: Minimum – can be reheated and reshaped but will not return to its original shape.
- Bonding: Coated – heated material can be pinched together for a temporary bond. A permanent bond can be created by removing the coating through scrubbing or with a bond solvent.
Physical Characteristics
- Colours: White, Beige, Blue
- Thickness: 1/8" (3.2 mm) and 1/16" (1.6 mm)
- Perforations: 1% or Solid
- Appearance: Opaque when heated
- Rigidity: Moderate/Maximum – 137.7 kpsi (Young's Modulus testing value)
- Surface: Smooth
Heating Instructions
The recommended method for heating Polyform is hot water in a splint bath. A heat gun should only be used for spot heating and adjustments.
| Thickness | Approx. Heating Time | Water Temperature | Working |
| 1/8" (3.2 mm) | 1 min | 150–160°F / 65–70°C | 3–5 min |
| 1/16" (1.6 mm) | 35 sec | 150–160°F / 65–70°C | 1 min |
Indications / Best Uses
Polyform splinting material is intended for the fabrication of custom-molded rigid splints, orthoses, and adaptive equipment. Recommended uses include:
- Thumb splints
- Small finger splints
- Hand splints
- Wrist splints
- Elbow splints for flexion
- Dynamic splints
- Neck collars
- Foot drop splints
- Clamshell splints
- Carpal tunnel splints
- Pediatric splints
- Adaptive equipment
- Splints for arthritis
- Flexor tendon repair splints Care & Cleaning
Store between 40–90°F (4–32°C) and below 65% relative humidity. Avoid prolonged exposure to light, particularly ultraviolet light, and avoid exposure to corrosive and ethylene oxide fumes.
Formed splints may lose their shape at temperatures above 135°F (57°C) and should be kept away from heat sources. Clean with soap and lukewarm water and allow the splint and straps to dry thoroughly before reapplication.
